No in\u00edcio da d\u00e9cada de 1940, seu centro j\u00e1 possu\u00eda ilumina\u00e7\u00e3o p\u00fablica, trafego regular de ve\u00edculos, abastecimento de \u00e1gua, instala\u00e7\u00e3o de telefones, cal\u00e7amento das principais ruas, cinemas, col\u00e9gios, clubes, f\u00e1bricas, pra\u00e7as e tudo que uma cidade em ascens\u00e3o precisava. De fato, era um dos principais polos urbanos do Nordeste, uma das maiores pra\u00e7as de algod\u00e3o do mundo e vinha crescendo em uma velocidade exponencial.<\/p>\n<p>Paralelo ao desenvolvimento, um campinense de nome ex\u00f3tico, chamado Vergniaud Wanderley foi nomeado prefeito da cidade em agosto de 1940, seu apresso pela arquitetura modernista, em especial o art d\u00e9co, foram respons\u00e1veis por uma das maiores revolu\u00e7\u00f5es urbanas da Rainha da Borborema.<\/p>\n<p>Vergniaud foi respons\u00e1vel por construir o primeiro edif\u00edcio art d\u00e9co do munic\u00edpio, o suntuoso Grande Hotel, que mais tarde seria adquirido pela municipalidade e se localiza onde atualmente funciona as secretarias de Administra\u00e7\u00e3o e Finan\u00e7as da PMCG. Durante sua gest\u00e3o nos anos de 1940 e 1945, Wanderley promoveu uma reforma gigantesca, apoiando a constru\u00e7\u00e3o de novos edif\u00edcios modernos e demolindo edifica\u00e7\u00f5es antigas visando o desenvolvimento e progresso.<\/p>\n<p>De fato, sua gest\u00e3o foi extremamente importante para a configura\u00e7\u00e3o urban\u00edstica que Campina Grande tem hoje. Por\u00e9m, diversas edifica\u00e7\u00f5es importantes para a hist\u00f3ria de nosso munic\u00edpio foram demolidas nesse projeto, entre elas: c\u00e9lebres casar\u00f5es coloniais, o Pa\u00e7o Municipal e a Igreja do Ros\u00e1rio que se encontrava ao lado do Cine Capit\u00f3lio. Al\u00e9m disso, fechou becos, acabou com corti\u00e7os, alargou e cal\u00e7ou ruas e construiu a maior art\u00e9ria urbana da cidade, a atual Av. Floriano Peixoto.<\/p>\n<p>Desse momento em diante, os primeiros edif\u00edcios art d\u00e9co da cidade come\u00e7am a aparecer, como o palacete da municipalidade (atual Biblioteca F\u00e9lix Ara\u00fajo), o pr\u00e9dio da Recebedoria de Rendas, o cais circular do A\u00e7ude Velho e o pr\u00e9dio da Central El\u00e9trica \u00e0s margens do A\u00e7ude Velho.<\/p>\n<p>A gest\u00e3o de Wegniaud Wanderley foi consideravelmente prejudicial \u00e0 hist\u00f3ria de Campina Grande, as demoli\u00e7\u00f5es apagaram boa parte dos registros urbanos e identidade do munic\u00edpio. Em contrapartida, uma nova identidade foi constru\u00edda e abra\u00e7ada pelos campinenses, o art d\u00e9co, que permanece vivo em edifica\u00e7\u00f5es como: o pr\u00e9dio dos Correios, a Esta\u00e7\u00e3o Ferrovi\u00e1ria Nova, o Cine S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9, o Ferro de Engomar e diversas outras casas e monumentos do munic\u00edpio.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-11  el_after_av_one_half  el_before_av_tab_section  avia-builder-el-last  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px;
